Notes & Quotes:
Inaugural Hungarian Sprint Race P11 for #25 Raul Fernandez & P15 for #79 Ai Ogura
RAUL FERNANDEZ
- Grid position: P15 – Race start on Front: medium – slick tire & Rear: soft – slick tire.
- After a challenging Friday, when Raul was unable to leap direct to the morning Qualifying 2 session, the 2nd Free Practice session did not unlock additional pace.
- The Qualifying 1 session was all about finding good balance, feel and track position around the stop-start Balaton park circuit and Raul could not get down to the lap time of the front-runners, ending up qualified in 16th spot for the afternoon Sprint – subsequently promoted to P15 after a rider penalty served on Jack Miller ahead dropped him behind Raul.
- Off the start, Raul made immediate progress, up to 12th place by mid-lap on the first circuit, before settling back to 13th across the stripe.
- On Lap 6 he went to P12 and two laps later was 11th.
- Finding himself in a gap which he could not close on the rider ahead, Raul came home in 11th. No points but some progress with race pace ahead of the 26 lap Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
“It’s a different kind of track, so we had a lot of work to find the setup of the bike that I feel good with. I think we made a step in the Sprint but, anyway, it was not enough. We need to find out why we are not really competitive when we go out with new tires - this was the big issue that we need to understand for tomorrow because this is where we can make the difference. The bike is quite different here compared to my normal setup and we need to understand why I can’t make full use of the new tire.”
AI OGURA
- Grid position: P21 – Race start on Front: medium – slick tire & Rear: soft – slick tire
- For Ai Ogura, arriving at a brand-new track, where there is no prior data or experience, is a challenge added to the fact that he is still serving his rookie season.
- Friday was a learning day and his pace not enough to make the cut in the afternoon Practice.
- A frustrating first Qualifying session left the young Japanese star in P21 with ground to gain in the Sprint and the main Grand Prix, on Sunday.
- When the lights went out, Ai converted 21st to 18th by mid-lap and then crossed the line to begin Lap 2 in 17th.
- Promoted to 16th on Lap 3, Ai raced his way to 15th on Lap 6 and consolidated the place over the remaining ten laps – closing the gap to the group ahead but unable to make any moves before the checkers flew after the 13 laps.
- No points but experience gained ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix.
“The performance is OK, but I had a bad Qualifying and that’s all - FP2 and the Sprint have been a lot better than Qualifying. This time, I don’t know why, I even got fresh soft tires in Qualifying but I couldn’t feel any difference with the used, so I gained only two tenths from FP2 to Qualifying which was a bit strange for me. In the Sprint race, I could go with the other riders, so it was quite OK.”
“We knew from the beginning it would be difficult with our starting positions but we went into the Sprint trying our best. Raul picked up a good pace by the end and managed to recover a few positions from the start. Ai as well, stayed there, following the guys. With both of them we picked up some good information. We could also see something we can improve compared to the others and we will to work hard tonight and try to better prepare tomorrow’s race.”
