Race Weekend Summary:
#25 Raul Fernandez finishes 6th in Indonesia as sole Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider.
- Onward from the land of the rising sun, the US based Trackhouse MotoGP Team headed south to the Indonesian archipelago and the island of Lombok, nestled in the azure Java Sea – prepared for a hot and humid weekend.
- Following #25 Raul Fernandez’s 7th place finish in the Grand Prix of Japan, the team left Motegi with confidence in the performance potential of the Aprilia RS-GP25 on the low grip Mandalika pavement.
- Japan had proved more challenging for homegrown team rookie, #79 Ai Ogura. Following his heavy, high-speed, crash during the San Marino Grand Prix, which damaged his right wrist and hand, he made a brave effort to finish 9th in the Saturday Sprint at Motegi before being forced to take the difficult decision to withdraw from his debut home race. A disappointing Sunday for Ai and the Japanese fans.
- Ai travelled to Lombok, despite the continuing discomfort in his hand, with an outside hope of being able to ride and also to support the unveiling of the new Gulf Oil colors on the Trackhouse RS-GP25 bikes. Chosen by fans, from a choice of three designs, the globally iconic colors of Trackhouse’s fuel and lubricant partner were back – Gulf on the bikes for Indonesia and the Malaysian round in two weeks.
- After the unveil of the new Gulf livery design on Thursday, at the Mandalika track, Ai’s persistent discomfort meant his plans to stay for the race weekend were cut short and he returned to Japan to continue rehabilitation treatment on his injuries with the priority being a return at Phillip Island, for the Australian Grand Prix.
- That left Raul as sole remaining Trackhouse rider for the weekend and when track action got underway on Friday, he was immediately competitive. By the afternoon Practice, he was on the pace and bounced straight to Saturday’s 2nd Qualifying session – and a guaranteed top 12 starting position on the weekend’s race grids.
- When Saturday qualifying arrived, Raul nailed his second Q2 run and grabbed 3rd position – front row for the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix and strong race pace on a track where the Aprilia was showing its ability to adapt to low grip track conditions and the intense heat and humidity of Lombok.
- Nailing a good start at lights out for Saturday’s Sprint, Raul rode a solid, mature, race and brought the #25 Trackhouse Aprilia home in third – his first visit to a MotoGP class podium - and for Trackhouse partner Gulf Oil, achieved in their first season racing in the MotoGP World Championship.
- The Trackhouse partner, Aprilia Racing Team, secured the Sprint win with an eye-catching performance from Marco Bezzecchi which gave a further boost to the team’s confidence ahead of Sunday’s 27 lap Grand Prix of Indonesia.
- Ambient temperature and humidity was at its highest of the race weekend when the Trackhouse MotoGP Team pulled into the Mandalika track on Sunday morning. 27 times around the 2.67-mile (4.3 kilometer) circuit was going to be physically draining.
- In front of almost 68,000 fans, Raul Fernandez went to the grid buoyed by Saturday’s podium and started the Grand Prix strongly when the red lights went out – battling within the lead group through Lap 1.
- Running alternatively 4th, or 5th, through most of the race, he dropped to 6th in the closing stages to score more points and round off a positive weekend in Indonesia for the USA’s only MotoGP team
RAUL FERNANDEZ
- Grid position: P3 – Started on Front: soft – slick tire & Rear: medium – slick tire
- Launching off his starting spot at the start of the 27-lap Grand Prix of Indonesia, Raul was in the mix as the lead group battled for track position around the first lap. Crossing the stripe for the first time, the #25 was 5th on the timing screens.
- Sticking with the lead group, he began to apply pressure on the bikes ahead and made 4th place on Lap 4.
- Hanging in a group battling for second, Raul held position until half distance when he slipped to 5th.
- With three to go, the 24-year-old from Madrid got caught up in a fierce fight for track position and completed the race in 6th place.
- While not a match for Saturday’s podium result, Raul was on race pace for the 72-mile (116 kilometer) journey to the checkers and registered yet another top 10 finish on the Gulf backed Trackhouse RS-GP25.
“We need to find something to get more power to improve overtaking. I’m not entirely happy because the pace in the race was actually pretty slow and I think we had more. At the end we couldn’t overtake - I tried to be very clean, but then Luca (Marini) changed the line and I didn’t have the space to change, so we touched. It is MotoGP and in some moments, small details make the difference, but you never know what would have happened. I’m still happy because I gave everything I had, but honestly, I expected a little bit more after yesterday.”
“For sure it has been a fun race. We enjoyed seeing Raul fighting. Of course, P6 is a positive result, but, overall, for how the race has developed we could have done a little bit better. If someone would have told me before we came here that we would be sixth, I would have been happy, but today I’m not completely happy. This is a good sign though because this weekend we had a good potential so, let’s take this P6, it’s positive and overall with the podium yesterday in the Sprint, always fighting in the front with the top guys, we have to be satisfied. But, we try to do better again next time.”
