Notes & Quotes:
Heading deeper into the late season Asian tour, the MotoGP World Championship has reached round 18 and the island of Lombok – home to Mandalika International Circuit, for the Grand Prix of Indonesia. Coming hard on the heels of the Japanese Grand Prix, the US based Trackhouse MotoGP Team comes to this round off the back of a strong weekend at Motegi with #25 Raul Fernandez, who took 7th place in the main race on Sunday and an 8th in the Sprint. His teammate, #79 Ai Ogura, had a tougher premier class home race debut after his heavy crash at the previous Grand Prix - San Marino – after which Ai was left nursing his right wrist and hand and despite his brave efforts, increasing pain and restricted movement in his braking hand meant a 9th place Sprint finish on Saturday, in front of his home fans, was his highlight. Bitterly disappointed, he was forced to sit out Sunday’s Grand Prix of Japan - a heavy blow for the young rookie from Tokyo but entirely understandable given that he was physically struggling with his Trackhouse RS-GP25 and on safety grounds, was advised to withdraw.
Ai now faces a battle to recover in the 4-day hiatus between Japan and this weekend at Mandalika and will be assessed midweek to determine his fitness ahead of the first Free Practice session on Friday. Added to the challenge he faces is the need to get up to speed quickly around yet another track which he has not sampled with MotoGP machinery. Last year, in his intermediate class Championship winning season, he hustled his Moto2 bike around Mandalika to take 2nd place so, while his 270hp+ Aprilia MotoGP prototype brings a new level of physical and mental challenge, Ai has form on the 2.67 mile (4.3 kilometer) stretch of Indonesian pavement.
As one of the newest motorsport facilities, Mandalika is a track that Raul Fernandez also does not have a great depth of experience racing. Opened in 2021, the track only came onto the MotoGP World Championship calendar in 2022, Raul’s debut year in the top class. It is a clockwise circuit that has smooth tarmac offering reasonably low grip with high track surface temperatures. Not a heavy braking track but challenging with a number of fast sweepers and a long, decreasing radius, right section at Turns 15 and 16 which put the emphasis on trail-braking stability and good drive out of the last left to make the most of the short start-finish sprint to turn 1. It is a track that the riders enjoy.
The return to Indonesia for the Trackhouse MotoGP Team also marks the return of fully Gulf liveried bikes. The iconic colors of the oil giant will, however, be all new - since the debut of the distinctive light blue and orange scheme at the opening round of the 2025 season, in Thailand – the livery that will appear this week is the result of direct involvement with fans. Back in August, Gulf and Trackhouse put three bike design options out to fans across the world – and the fans decided on the livery they liked best. All will be revealed on Thursday, October 2nd, ahead of the track debut of the new Gulf scheme on Friday morning when both Trackhouse RS-GP25 bikes will roll onto pit road for the first free practice session for the Grand Prix of Indonesia.
After the global support that the Gulf colors received when the #25 and #79 Trackhouse bikes first hit the track at the beginning of the season – the first time that Gulf brought its classic colors to the pinnacle of two-wheel Grand Prix racing – Mandalika marks the return and will throw another version of Gulf’s colors onto track with Trackhouse and we cannot wait to reveal the stunning new look!
RAÚL FERNÁNDEZ
“This is going to be the first back-to-back weekend of this Asia tour. I like the Mandalika Circuit and we did a good race in Motegi so, basically, we need to keep this line to do a good Friday and try to be within the top 10 in Practice. After that, we have to be a little bit more ambitious, trying to make it to the first few rows on the grid and if this works, we can think about improving the results. Hopefully, we can work well to reach this goal and with a fantastic new Gulf livery as well, I want to have fun this weekend!”
AI OGURA
“We saw some good potential in Motegi last weekend, although I was struggling with my hand injury and sadly couldn’t start my home Grand Prix on Sunday. I’m using these days in between to recover as much as I can and then, first of all, we have to find out if I can compete in Indonesia. As it’s one of our rounds in Gulf livery this year and I would obviously be very proud to show these beautiful colors and one that our fans voted to have on my bike, I hope I can heal up enough to be able to have a good performance.”
“We’re going to Mandalika, where we will be back in Gulf colors, which is great and we are very proud of that – especially after so many of our fans chose the livery we will run. We are coming from Motegi with Raul who showed a very good performance with points in the Sprint and a P7 in the main race, so we aim to keep the momentum with him. Of course, we have to check the condition of Ai once we are there - we will see his condition on Friday and then hopefully we can carry on all the weekend.”
